Woman sentenced for violating Prevention and Control of Disease Regulation
A 46-year-old woman was fined $5,000 by the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts today (July 20) for violating the Prevention and Control of Disease Regulation (Cap. 599A) (the Regulation).
The woman was earlier issued a Notification of Medical Surveillance which subjected her to medical surveillance according to specified conditions. Before the expiry of the medical surveillance, she failed to observe the specific conditions and left the place of accommodation on December 12 and 13, 2021 respectively. She was charged with two counts of contravening sections 15(1), 15(2) and 15(3) of the Regulation and was fined a total of $5,000 by the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts today.
Under the Regulation, failing to observe any condition specified under medical surveillance is a criminal offence. Offenders are subject to a maximum fine of $5,000 and imprisonment for six months.
A spokesman for the Department of Health said that co-operation by the public is the key to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the community. Violating the Regulation is an irresponsible act which increases the risk of exposing other persons to infection, and the public are solemnly reminded to comply with the regulations. The spokesman reiterated that resolute actions will be taken against anyone who breaches the regulations.
