U.S. Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo will travel to New York on Friday, July 20, 2018.

Secretary Pompeo will meet with Ambassador Nikki Haley and members of the United Nations Security Council, as well as Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and the Japanese Ambassador to the UN Koro Bessho, to discuss the latest on the DPRK. The Secretary will also meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss a range of issues, including preparations for the UN General Assembly High-Level week in September and UN reform.

The United States condemns the ongoing attacks by Daniel Ortega’s para-police against university students, journalists, and clergy across the country, in addition to the arbitrary detention of Civic Alliance leadership. Every additional victim of this violence and intimidation campaign further undermines Ortega’s legitimacy. We call on Ortega to cease his repression of the people of Nicaragua immediately.

The Nicaraguan government must heed the Nicaraguan people’s call for democratic reforms immediately. Early, free, fair, and transparent elections are the best path back to democracy and respect for human rights in Nicaragua.

As part of our response to flagrant human rights abuses by members of the Government of Nicaragua, the State Department has imposed additional U.S. visa restrictions on individuals responsible for human rights abuses or undermining democracy in Nicaragua, as well as on their family members. The United States will continue to expose and hold accountable those responsible for the Ortega government’s campaign of violence and repression.

On Sunday, July 15, representatives from the United States held the first General Officer-level talks with the DPRK since 2009. They met to discuss the return of U.S. service members’ remains missing since the Korean War. This meeting was aimed at fulfilling one of the commitments made by Chairman Kim at the Singapore Summit. Today’s talks were productive and cooperative and resulted in firm commitments.

Working level meetings between U.S. and North Korean officials will begin on Monday, July 16, to ‎coordinate the next steps, including the transfer of remains already collected in the DPRK.

Additionally, both sides agreed to re-commence field operations in the DPRK to search for the estimated 5,300 Americans who never returned home.

Two years ago, nearly 250 Turkish citizens lost their lives, and thousands were wounded in the heinous failed coup attempt of July 15. On July 13, Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan met with Hong Kong Secretary of Justice Teresa Cheng at the Department of State in Washington, DC. During their meeting, the Deputy Secretary and the Secretary of Justice discussed the U.S.-Hong Kong partnership in a wide range of areas. Deputy Secretary Sullivan reiterated firm U.S. support for U.S.-Hong Kong ties under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework, noting Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy, rule of law, and independent judiciary.
