Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Carl Risch will travel June 3-9 to Russia, Kazakhstan, and the Kyrgyz Republic to participate in a series of meetings with U.S. diplomats and foreign government authorities.

While on this trip, Assistant Secretary Risch will engage in bilateral discussions with counterparts on issues relevant to consular protection and U.S. visas. He will also open a new Consular Section in Moscow.

The United States is committed to long-term engagement with Russia, Kazakhstan, and the Kyrgyz Republic on a variety of consular issues.

On the 29th anniversary of the violent suppression of peaceful demonstrations in and around Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, we remember the tragic loss of innocent lives.

As Liu Xiaobo wrote in his 2010 Nobel Peace Prize speech, delivered in absentia, “the ghosts of June 4th have not yet been laid to rest.”

We join others in the international community in urging the Chinese government to make a full public accounting of those killed, detained or missing; to release those who have been jailed for striving to keep the memory of Tiananmen Square alive; and to end the continued harassment of demonstration participants and their families.

The United States views the protection of human rights as a fundamental duty of all countries, and we urge the Chinese government to respect the universal rights and fundamental freedoms of all citizens.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will lead the U.S. delegation to the 48^th Regular Session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), the Western Hemisphere’s oldest and most respected multilateral organization, to be held in Washington, D.C. June 3-5. Secretary Pompeo will address the General Assembly’s plenary session at 11:05 a.m. on Monday, June 4 and will engage in discussions and consultations with regional counterparts on issues of shared interest.

The U.S. delegation will also include Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan, Ambassador Carlos Trujillo, U.S. Permanent Representative to the OAS, and Francisco Palmieri, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs.

Acting Assistant Secretary Susan Thornton will travel to Singapore, June 4-7, 2018. In Singapore, she will participate in Senior Officials Meetings for the East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Forum, and chair Senior Officials Meetings for the Lower Mekong Initiative and the Friends of the Lower Mekong. She will also engage with her counterparts on a range of political, security, and economic issues.
