Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo spoke with Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok about the August 31 attack in Amsterdam Central Station that injured two U.S. citizens. The Secretary expressed appreciation for the quick response of Dutch law enforcement to the attack and assistance given to the victims and their families. Dutch and U.S. law enforcement are cooperating in the investigation, and the Secretary and Foreign Minister reiterated their commitment to stand together in our common fight against terrorism in all forms.

Dutch authorities have announced that investigations are focused on a terrorist motive for this unprovoked, horrifying attack. Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo spoke with Vice President Ayad Allawi of Iraq, to discuss political developments in Iraq and Baghdad-Erbil relations. He stressed that formation of a new government is a sovereign Iraqi process that should proceed according to Iraq’s constitutional timeline and reflect the will of Iraqi voters. Secretary Pompeo emphasized that the United States hopes to see a strong Iraqi government that includes all communities and serves all of the Iraqi people.
