Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and India Minister of External Affairs Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and India Minister of External Affairs Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar discussed the importance of the UK-India relationship and a shared drive to deepen the economic and security partnership between the two countries.

They reflected on the strategic and economic significance of the India 2030 Roadmap signed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson and India Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the work to build a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement deal that maximises benefits for both countries.

The Foreign Secretary thanked Dr Jaishankar for the Indian Government’s support ahead of the UK’s Carrier Strike Group (CSG) arrival in India. They agreed that the CSG visit, the UK’s recent ASEAN Dialogue Partner Status and a commitment to deepen economic ties and strengthen supply chains is concrete evidence of the UK’s commitment to the region.

On climate change they discussed India’s work towards a new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and ambitious targets on renewable energy by 2030. They also agreed on the importance of collaboration on technology, finance, clean energy and transport, and adaptation and resilience.

On Afghanistan, the Foreign Secretary shared with Dr Jaishankar the UK’s priorities including safe passage out of Afghanistan; meeting humanitarian needs; counter-terrorism; regional stability; and protecting human rights.

The Prime Minister met founder of Amazon and the Bezos Earth Fund, Jeff Bezos, in New York today.

They discussed the upcoming COP26 Summit and agreed that there was an urgent need to mobilise more public and private money to help developing countries protect biodiversity, including through the LEAF Coalition.

The Prime Minister welcomed the Bezos Earth Fund’s commitment, announced tonight, to give $1 billion to protect forests and remove carbon from the air. The Prime Minister and Mr Bezos agreed to work together to see what more could be done in the run up to and at COP26.

The Prime Minister raised the issue of taxation, and hoped progress could be in implementing the G7 agreement on tax.

The leaders discussed the situation in Afghanistan. The Prime Minister expressed his thanks to Qatar for their ongoing support evacuating British nationals from Afghanistan.

The Prime Minister and Amir agreed on the importance of the international community working together to uphold stability and prevent a humanitarian crisis in the region. The Prime Minister underscored that any recognition of the Taliban should be conditional on them respecting human rights and allowing safe passage to those who want to leave the country.

The two leaders discussed the strength of the UK-Qatar relationship in areas including trade, defence and security. They agreed to work together to deepen the relationship further.

The leaders thanked one another for their support around the evacuation of Afghanistan last month. The Prime Minister outlined his priorities on Afghanistan, including ensuring any international recognition of the Taliban is predicated on them respecting human rights and allowing safe passage out of the country.

They discussed the strength of the relationship between the UK and Turkey across defence, trade and the links between our people.

The Prime Minister welcomed Turkey’s efforts to address climate change, particularly its action on renewable energy.

The Prime Minister and Vice President welcomed last week’s announcement of the AUKUS defence alliance, which will protect our people, defend our values and create new opportunities for UK-US cooperation.

They agreed that the UK-US relationship remains unrivalled in its scale and steadfastness. As trusted partners we cooperate extensively on defence, security, trade and foreign policy, and the relationship between our people is incredibly close.

The Prime Minister welcomed the US announcement this week that vaccinated British travellers will be able to enter the US from November, which he said would boost both our countries’ economic recoveries.

The Prime Minister and Vice President Harris discussed the work the UK and US are doing together to tackle climate change. The Prime Minister thanked Vice President Harris for the extra funding the US have announced today for supporting developing countries to transition away from fossil fuels.

The Prime Minister and Vice President Harris talked about the important role our diplomatic and humanitarian expertise can play in promoting our shared values around the world. In particular they discussed the importance of girls’ education in improving the prospects of developing countries.

The Prime Minister thanked the Vice President for the US military leadership during the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
