A 54-year-old male remand person in custody at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre, who suffered from hypertension, diabetes mellitus and liver cirrhosis, and had a chronic drug abuse history, had been remanded for the offence of possession of a dangerous drug since March 3, 2022, and had received continuous medical care at the institution hospital. At 1.30am today (March 8), the remand person in custody suddenly felt physical discomfort in the hospital ward. The correctional officer immediately sent him to a public hospital for further treatment. His condition deteriorated and he was certified dead at 3.16am today.
Also, a 71-year-old male person in custody who suffered from hypertension, diabetes mellitus and renal failure was found unconscious on his bed inside the institution hospital of Stanley Prison by a correctional officer at 3.11am today. First aid treatment was immediately applied, and the person in custody was sent to a public hospital for further treatment. His condition deteriorated and he was certified dead at 4.20am today. The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of conspiracy to defraud in November 2021. He required continuous medical care at the institution hospital and a public hospital due to old age and chronic illness.
Both cases have been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
