London ETO supports Hong Kong youth a cappella concert in London (with photos)

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, London (London ETO) supported an a cappella concert of The Mockingbird at Conway Hall in London, the United Kingdom (UK), on March 26 and 27 (London time) to showcase the young music talent of Hong Kong and Hong Kong’s pop music culture.

The concert featured over 15 enchanting Cantonese and English pop songs across generations through the vocal performance by The Mockingbird, formed by a group of Hong Kong students studying in universities in the UK.

Speaking at the concert, Deputy Director-General of the London ETO Ms Amy Wong said that it is the London ETO’s great pleasure to enable young performers from Hong Kong to showcase their musical talent in London. The Mockingbird’s enchanting performance exemplifies Hong Kong’s unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, making it an ideal hub for international cultural exchanges as supported by the National 14th Five-Year Plan.

Ms Wong added that Hong Kong has a bustling schedule of arts and cultural events throughout the year. Just this month, the Hong Kong Art March has been staged, covering a wide range of events including art exhibitions, pop and film events and cultural summits. In April, Hong Kong will launch the second Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival. The first Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo in October will also provide a comprehensive platform for showcasing top-notch performing arts productions and enhancing exchanges to create business opportunities for these programmes and creative talent. These events highlight the diverse arts and cultural offerings in Hong Kong.

The Mockingbird is an a cappella group founded in 2009 by Hong Kong students studying in universities in the UK. The group have staged performances across different cities in the UK including London, Manchester and Cambridge.

Grading of beach water quality released

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) today (March 28) released the latest grading of water quality for eight gazetted beaches that are open for swimming.

Seven beaches were rated as Good (Grade 1) and one as Fair (Grade 2).

Grade 1 beaches are:

Big Wave Bay Beach Repulse Bay Beach
Clear Water Bay Second Beach Silver Mine Bay Beach
Deep Water Bay Beach Stanley Main Beach
Golden Beach

Grade 2 beach is:
Silverstrand Beach

Compared with the grading released last week, there was no change in the grading for these beaches.

Under the present grading system, beaches are classified into four grades, namely Good (Grade 1), Fair (Grade 2), Poor (Grade 3) and Very Poor (Grade 4), according to the level of E. coli in the water. Grades are calculated on the basis of the geometric mean of the E. coli counts on the five most recent sampling occasions.

While the ratings represent the general water quality at the beaches, an EPD spokesman reminded members of the public that water quality could be temporarily affected during and after periods of heavy rain. Bathers should avoid swimming at beaches for up to three days after a tropical cyclone or heavy rainfall.

A summary of beach grades is published weekly before the weekend. The latest beach grades based on the most current data may be obtained from the EPD’s website on Beach Water Quality (www.epd.gov.hk/epd/beach) or the beach hotline, 2511 6666. Members of the public can also obtain the latest daily water quality forecast information for all beaches that are open for swimming through the Beach Water Quality Forecast mobile application (available for download from: www.epd.gov.hk/en/BWQApp) or the dedicated beach water quality forecast page (www.epd.gov.hk/en/BWQForecast) on the EPD’s beach thematic website. read more
