Hong Kong Customs fully supports National Security Education Day (with photos)

     Hong Kong Customs has been playing an important role in safeguarding national security and is giving its full support to National Security Education Day organised by the Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The department held the Hong Kong Customs College Open Day today (April 14) to promote national security education to members of the public through a series of interactive activities and allow them to learn about the department’s work on safeguarding nation security from multiple perspectives.

     The open day featured a wide range of activities, including an exhibition on national security education to enhance public understanding of national security and introduce Customs’ work in safeguarding national security. Specially-made sweet buns and milk tea carrying the message of safeguarding national security were distributed to visitors. In addition, game booths were set up to introduce the department’s responsibility to perform its gatekeeping role in an interactive manner. Visitors not only enjoyed the performances by members of the Customs and Excise Department Band, Guards of Honour, Dragon and Lion Dance Team, Detector Dog Team as well as schools and youth groups from various districts, but also watched the National Security Cup 3×3 Basketball Tournament. Other programmes included the display of vehicle X-ray inspection system, guided tours to the Professional Development Training Block, the experience of the Cave Automatic Virtual Environment System and the display of firearms and weapons.

     The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Chan Kwok-ki, the Secretary for Security, Mr Tang Ping-keung, and the Under Secretary for Security, Mr Michael Cheuk, also attended the event. 

     Moreover, Guards of Honour will participate in the flag raising ceremony held by the Security Bureau and its disciplinary forces and auxiliary services at the Hong Kong Police College tomorrow (April 15). The Commissioner of Customs and Excise, Ms Louise Ho; the Deputy Commissioner (Management and Strategic Development), Mr Chan Tsz-tat; and the Deputy Commissioner (Control and Enforcement), Mr Mark Woo, will attend the ceremony.

CAS holds open day to promote National Security Education Day (with photos)

     In support of National Security Education Day, the Civil Aid Service (CAS) held the National Security Education Day cum Civil Aid Service Open Day at its headquarters today (April 14) to raise public awareness of national security and showcase its achievements.

     The Deputy Financial Secretary, Mr Michael Wong, officiated at the kick-off ceremony of the open day and the opening ceremony of the CAS’s National Security Education Exhibition Centre. In his speech, Mr Wong said that national security is an important cornerstone to ensure Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability, and safeguarding national security is the collective responsibility of all. He expressed his gratitude to the CAS for their unwavering efforts in promoting national security education. This includes focus on training of cadets and facilitating their development into future leaders and responsible citizens by motivating them to participate actively in community service, civic education and discipline training. The CAS also arranges visits for cadets to different cities in the Mainland, providing chances for exchanges with local youth and learning about the latest development and achievement of our country.

     Over 3 000 visitors joined the open day which featured an exciting programme of activities, adding to the lively atmosphere.

     Apart from viewing the national security exhibition, visitors also enjoyed a mountain search-and-rescue demonstration, a foot drill performance, a military music performance, and a bicycle show by CAS members. In addition, Professor Gu Min-kang of the Education University of Hong Kong and the Senior Assistant Commissioner (Development) of the CAS, Dr Wong Kong-tin, gave two talks to explain the importance of national security for Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability.

     The CAS will do its best to continue to uphold the principle of “one country, two systems” and safeguard national security, while providing emergency relief and serving the community to build a better home for Hong Kong people.

FSD fully supports National Security Education Day (with photos)

     In response to and support of National Security Education Day, the Fire Services Department (FSD) held an open day today (April 14) at the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy (FASA) in Tseung Kwan O, providing an opportunity to deepen the public’s understanding of national security, as well as the FSD’s work on safeguarding national security, public order and safety. The event attracted more than 11 000 visitors. 

     At the open day, exhibition boards and game booths on national security were set up to enhance public understanding of the importance of national security through interactive engagement. A flag-raising ceremony was also held with the FSD’s Guard of Honour performing the Chinese-style foot drill. Moreover, simulation training facilities, a simulated Pak Shing Kok railway station, the Fire and Ambulance Services Education Centre cum Museum, and the National Security Education cum Resource Centre were open to the public. Members of the public were able to obtain information on the department’s recruitment exercise and experience the physical fitness test for recruitment during their visit. 

     Meanwhile, the Secretary for Justice, Mr Paul Lam, SC, and the Secretary for Security, Mr Tang Ping-keung, accompanied by the Director of Fire Services, Mr Andy Yeung, visited the exhibitions and watched performances with the public at the FASA.

Seamless connectivity for villages

     To meet the demand for high-speed broadband services in remote areas of Hong Kong, the Government launched the Subsidy Scheme to Extend Fibre-based Networks to Villages in Remote Areas where, at present, about 80,000 villagers in more than 160 villages are benefitting from such networks.

     Apart from interviewing a representative from the Office of the Communications Authority to learn more about the scheme’s effectiveness, news.gov.hk spoke with Tai O and Mui Wo villagers who expounded on the advantages they are receiving.
