Raising air quality in cramped units

     â€‹The Sham Shui Po District Office is facilitating donations of locally developed energy-efficient air purifiers, via community living rooms, to families in subdivided units, where PM2.5 concentrations are higher due to poor ventilation. The award-winning air purifier was developed by Lingnan University to specifically address the needs of subdivided households.

     News.gov.hk spoke with District Officer (Sham Shui Po), Mr Paul Wong, to learn about how the Government utilised data to target households in need of the purifiers. A representative from Lingnan University and a recipient of one of the devices also spoke about the technology involved and its effectiveness.

Fatal traffic accident in Mong Kok

     Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident happened in Mong Kok in the small hours today (May 26) in which a man and a woman died.

     At 2.46am, a motorcycledriven by a 22-year-old man was travelling along Argyle Street towards Nathan Road westbound with a 24-year-old female passenger on board, while a taxi driven by a 27-year-old man was travelling along Nathan Road northbound with a 38-year-old male passenger on board. When the motorcycle was approaching the junction of Argyle Street and Nathan Road, it reportedly collided with the taxi. A 69-year-old male pedestrian was also hit by fragments from the collision.
     
     The motorcyclist and the passenger fell out of the motorcycle. Sustaining serious multiple injuries, they were rushed to Kwong Wah Hospital in unconscious state and were certified dead at 3.55am and 3.43am respectively. The taxi driver and the taxi passenger suffered from limbs injuries, while the pedestrian suffered from face injury. They were sent to Kwong Wah Hospital in conscious state.

     Investigation by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, Kowloon West is underway.

SCST congratulates Chiu Hin-chun on winning gold

     â€‹The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr Kevin Yeung, today (May 25) extended his congratulations to Hong Kong rowing athlete Chiu Hin-chun on winning a gold medal at Lightweight Men's Single Sculls in the 2024 World Rowing Cup II Lucerne, Switzerland.
      
     Mr Yeung said, "Chiu Hin-chun reaped a gold medal with his outstanding performance in the competition. He also wrote a new page in Hong Kong’s rowing history for being the first Hong Kong rowing athlete to gain a gold medal at an international competition. We are proud of his striving spirit."




SITI continues visit in Paris (with photos)

     The Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Professor Sun Dong, continued his visit in Paris, France on May 25 (Paris time).
 
     Professor Sun accompanied the Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, to visit the Innovation Hub of Groupe ADP at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. They listened to the group's overall and international businesses, as well as its latest developments including promoting development of smart airports and low-carbon transformation, as well as supporting the Paris Olympics. They also learnt about the strategic direction and relevant plans of the group's Innovation Hub. The Innovation Hub promotes spread of corporate innovation culture by organising conferences, workshops and various activities. It also rolls out pilot projects with start-ups, and supports the investment and financing needs of start-ups as well as partner investment funds.

     The Under Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Clement Woo, and the Special Representative for Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs to the European Union, Ms Shirley Yung, also attended.

     In the afternoon on May 24 (Paris time), Professor Sun visited Station F, a start-up park in the city centre of Paris, to learn more about its operation mode and community network. The park provides start-ups with service on project plans as well as additional support from incubators and accelerators. The park is also actively establishing partnerships with innovation parks in other regions in the hope of attracting overseas enterprises to the park and making the composition of the park's enterprises more internationalised.

     Professor Sun concluded the visit in Paris in the afternoon on May 25 and will arrive in Hong Kong on Sunday (May 26, Hong Kong time).

FS continues visiting Paris (with photos/videos)

     The Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, continued his visit to Paris this morning (May 25, Paris time).

     This morning, Mr Chan, accompanied by the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Professor Sun Dong, and the Under Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Clement Woo, visited the Innovation Hub of Groupe ADP, which operates and manages the Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport in Paris as well as over 20 other airports worldwide. He learnt about the group and its Innovation Hub's efforts in promoting development of smart airports and low-carbon transformation, supporting the Paris Olympics, developing low-altitude aviation, and collaborating with aviation-related startups on innovation and technology. Mr Chan pointed out that the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is efficient and professional in its operation and management, and it is accelerating its development as a green airport city, including expediting the study on applying sustainable aviation fuels. He encouraged the HKIA and the CDG Airport to enhance knowledge and experience exchange in innovation and green initiatives, and foster further cooperation.

     Yesterday afternoon (May 24, Paris time), Mr Chan visited VivaTech 2024, Europe's largest annual technology and startup event. Held annually in Paris, VivaTech brings together startups, technology leaders, incubation and acceleration platforms, investors, and others, providing a platform for fostering cross-sectoral innovation cooperation and addressing global technological development challenges. VivaTech this year focuses on artificial intelligence and establishing a sustainable future. This year, Hong Kong set up a pavilion for the first time, with over 10 Hong Kong startups participating. They are engaged in artificial intelligence, green technologies, fintech, medical technology, Internet of Things technology, and more. Mr Chan visited the Hong Kong Pavilion, and encouraged participating Hong Kong enterprises to actively explore business opportunities on the occasion, seek more exchanges and collaborations, and tell the good Hong Kong innovation stories to the world.

     Mr Chan also met with the senior management of VivaTech to learn their experiences in organising and managing the large-scale exhibition. Mr Chan said that Hong Kong would scale up its participation in VivaTech next year, and invited the organiser to actively consider hosting related exhibitions and events in Hong Kong.

     Yesterday, Mr Chan visited the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris and discussed enhancing cultural and artistic cooperation with the theatre's Director, Mr Rachid Ouramdane. Mr Chan said that Hong Kong has the unique advantage of blending Chinese and Western cultures, making it the best platform for international art to reach audiences in the Mainland and Asia. He encouraged the theatre to tour in Hong Kong, which would promote deeper cross-regional cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and France, and bring more diverse and international content to Hong Kong's mega events.

     After completing his visit to Paris, Mr Chan will depart for San Francisco, the United States, in the morning of May 27 (Paris time), to continue his visit.
