â€‹As the Heat Stress at Work Warning is now in effect, the Labour Department (LD) reminds employers and employees to take appropriate measures during the effective period of the warning to prevent heat stroke when working in hot weather or hot environments.
      
     Employees who work outdoors or in non-air-conditioned indoor environments face high levels of heat stress and are at a relatively higher risk of heat stroke. Employers should assess the risk factors of heat stress for employees at work and, based on the identified risk factors, take necessary preventive and control measures, including rescheduling work periods, setting up shading covers, providing ventilation and heat dissipation equipment, and reminding employees to replenish water and rest in a timely manner.
      
     The Heat Stress at Work Warning is formulated by the LD based on the Hong Kong Heat Index. There are three levels of the warning: Amber, Red and Black, which help employers and employees better understand the level of heat stress while working outdoors or indoors without air-conditioning systems.
      
     A spokesman for the LD said that when the department issues the Heat Stress at Work Warning, employers must refer to the criteria and recommendations provided in the "Guidance Notes on Prevention of Heat Stroke at Work" to conduct risk assessments, according to the workloads and other relevant heat stress risk factors, for employees who work outdoors or in non-air-conditioned indoor workplaces. Appropriate rest breaks should be arranged every hour, as far as reasonably practicable, based on various levels of the Heat Stress at Work Warning, to reduce employees' risk of heat stroke.
      
     Employees must also follow instructions to rest on time. Whenever there are any symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as headache, dizziness, thirst, and nausea, they should rest in a cool and shady place, drink water, and inform employers/supervisors to take appropriate action immediately.
      
     The LD issued the "Guidance Notes on Prevention of Heat Stroke at Work", detailing the various risk factors that should be considered when conducting heat stress risk assessments and recommending corresponding control measures for identified risk factors for employers' and employees' reference.          The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council announced today (June 24) that applications for its Fellowships and Scholarships for Overseas Studies (including the award for students with disabilities) for the 2025/26 academic year are now open. The closing date for all applications is September 6, 2024.
 
         The fellowships and scholarships aim at encouraging outstanding students to pursue further studies in renowned institutions overseas. Successful candidates are expected to have a strong sense of commitment to Hong Kong and be ready to contribute to the community upon graduation.
 
         The fellowships are for studies leading to postgraduate degrees either by research or coursework. The maximum value of a fellowship is HK$300,000 per year, tenable for up to three years for a doctoral degree or two years for a master's degree. The scholarships are for studies leading to undergraduate degrees. The maximum value of a scholarship is HK$280,000 per year, tenable for up to three years.
 
         The applicants will be responsible for fulfilling all application procedures and admission requirements of the academic institutions of their choice.

         Shortlisted applicants of the Fellowships and Scholarships for Overseas Studies will be invited to attend interviews in Hong Kong. The first round of interviews is scheduled for January 2025. If found suitable, applicants will be invited for a final interview to be held in February or March 2025. For the Overseas Fellowship/Scholarship for Disabled Students, shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend one interview in Hong Kong in February or March 2025.

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (June 24) that due to big waves, red flags have been hoisted at Shek O Beach and Big Wave Bay Beach in Southern District, Hong Kong Island, and Hung Shing Yeh Beach in Islands District. Beachgoers are advised not to swim at these beaches.

     The Registration and Electoral Office (REO) today (June 24) announced that an office of its Voter Registration Division, originally located at 13/F, Kowloonbay International Trade and Exhibition Centre, 1 Trademart Drive, Kowloon Bay, Kowloon, has been moved to 29/F, Standard Chartered Tower, Millennium City 1, 388 Kwun Tong Road, Kwun Tong, Kowloon. Owing to the relocation, the two offices for inspection of the final registers of electors/voters of geographical constituencies, functional constituencies and Election Committee (EC) subsectors and members of the EC by specified persons for a purpose related to the election have been updated as follows –
