Welcome home reception for HKSAR Delegation to 1st National Student (Youth) Games held today (with photos)

     The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government hosted a welcome home reception at Ma On Shan Sports Centre, Sha Tin, this afternoon (December 16) to congratulate home athletes of the HKSAR Delegation on their triumphant return to the 1st National Student (Youth) Games (NSYG) and express gratitude to the coaches and support teams for their efforts. The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr Kevin Yeung, officiated at the ceremony and presented certificates of commendation to the athletes with outstanding performances.
      
     Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Yeung said the Government sent a delegation of 720 athletes to participate in the 1st NSYG, which is the largest delegation ever for the HKSAR to take part in such a national multisport event in the country. The Hong Kong team achieved an encouraging result and won a total of 48 medals in the finals of seven sports in the School Category and 27 sports in the Open Category, comprising 10 gold medals, 15 silver medals and 23 bronze medals.
      
     The 1st NSYG was held in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, between November 5 and 15. The NSYG, merged from the National Student Sports Games and the National Youth Games, aims to facilitate interactions and exchanges among young athletes in sports to raise the level of competition and performance of sports, as well as identify potential athletes.
      
     Also attending the reception today were the President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, and the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Delegation, Mr Timothy Fok; the Permanent Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism and Honorary Adviser of the Delegation, Mr Joe Wong; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services and Deputy Chef de Mission of the Delegation, Mr Vincent Liu; the Commissioner for Sports and member of the Organising Committee of the Delegation, Mr Sam Wong; the Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Leisure Services) and member of the Organising Committee of the Delegation, Miss Winnie Chui; the Head of Sports Section of the Department of Publicity, Cultural and Sports Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mr Zhu Jianping; and the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Delegation, Mr Cheng King-leung.

United Christian Hospital appeals to public for missing patient

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesman for the United Christian Hospital (UCH) made the following appeal today (December 16) regarding an impatient leaving the hospital without notifying hospital staff:

     A 35-year-old female patient left the Gynaecology ward without notifying hospital staff at around 8.30am this morning. 

     Upon departure of the patient without informing the ward, security guards were deployed to search for the patient within the hospital compound and the vicinity. The hospital also reported to the Police for assistance. The patient is yet to be located. 

     The hospital is very concerned about the incident and will fully co-operate with the Police in order to locate the patient.

     The patient is about 1.6-meter tall, short hair and of medium body build. According to closed-circuit television footage, the patient was wearing a light-coloured jacket, black top, jeans and white shoes when she left the hospital.

     The hospital appeals to the public to contact the hospital at 3949 4002 or the Police if they know the whereabouts of the patient. UCH has reported the case to the Hospital Authority Head Office via the Advanced Incident Reporting System.

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (December 16) that due to big waves, the red flag has been hoisted at Silverstrand Beach in Sai Kung District. Beachgoers are advised not to swim at the beach.




HAD opens temporary cold shelters

     In view of the cold weather, the Home Affairs Department has opened 18 temporary shelters in various districts today (December 16) for people in need of the service. The temporary shelters will remain open when the Cold Weather Warning is in force.

     To ensure that cold shelter users can rest in a quiet and undisturbed environment, members of the public or agencies wishing to make donations to shelter users are requested to register with the staff of the shelter first. Donors will then be directed to place the donated items at a specified indoor location. The staff will help notify the shelter users to collect the items on their own.

     Anyone seeking temporary refuge or with any questions about the donation arrangements at the cold shelters may call the department's hotline 2572 8427 for more information.
