The Commissioner for the Development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Ms Maisie Chan, visited Foshan today (January 29) to meet with leaders of the Foshan Municipal Government as well as leaders of the Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Bureau and Office of Leading Group for the Development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area of Foshan Municipality. She also visited Lingnan Tiandi and two local enterprises.
Upon her arrival in Foshan in the morning, Ms Chan called on Member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Foshan Municipal Committee and Vice Mayor of the Foshan Municipal Government, Mr Liu Jie, as well as leaders of the Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Bureau and Office of Leading Group for the Development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area of Foshan Municipality to learn about the latest developments of Foshan, and exchange views on further deepening Hong Kong’s co-operation with Foshan to promote the high-quality development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Ms Chan said that Hong Kong and Foshan have always been close partners and have co-operated on various fronts to achieve complementarity and mutual benefits. Foshan has a solid foundation in manufacturing and enjoys the advantage of a complete industry chain, while Hong Kong has rich experience in finance, commerce, logistics, management and professional services. Under the GBA development, the co-operation between Hong Kong and Foshan can reinforce the complementarity of industries, promote the efficient and smooth flow of various factors of production, and strengthen the co-ordinated development of the GBA.
Ms Chan added that the Guangdong-Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Development Promotion Centre, which officially came into operation in April 2023, had further enhanced the publicity and promotional efforts of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in the Mainland cities of the GBA through activities of different natures. The Promotion Centre has provided practical support for Hong Kong people and enterprises seeking development in Foshan and encouraged Mainland talents and enterprises, including those in Foshan, to leverage Hong Kong’s unique advantages under the principle of “one country, two systems” to “go global”, thereby creating even greater room for development.
　　
In the afternoon, Ms Chan departed for Lingnan Tiandi to learn about the development of the cultural tourism industry and experience in revitalising historic heritage in Foshan. Lingnan Tiandi is one of the most well-preserved compounds of historic buildings in the Mainland, and is an integrated development project with dining, retail, hotel, entertainment and cultural facilities.
Ms Chan then visited an enterprise that produced architectural ceramic products and an enterprise that specialised in the engineering and technology of high-end functional medical non-woven fabric in Foshan. She was briefed about the latest developments and opportunities of the industries by the representatives of the two enterprises. Ms Chan said that Hong Kong is blessed with the strong support of our country and our close connection to the world, and is the only world-class city that can capitalise on both the China advantage and the international advantage. She encouraged Foshan enterprises with development potential to make good use of Hong Kong’s unique advantages, especially Hong Kong’s international business network and the rich experience of talents in professional management, to develop global markets, thereby fully leveraging Hong Kong’s dual roles in “going global and attracting foreign investment”.
The Secretary for Health, Professor Lo Chung-mau, met with an expert delegation led by Professor Ge Junbo, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, today (January 29). The delegation comprising experts of various national chest pain centres are here to exchange views on the establishment of Hong Kong’s first chest pain centre that will meet national accreditation standards.
At the meeting, Professor Lo expressed his gratitude to the experts for visiting Hong Kong from different places in the Mainland to offer guidance and exchange views on national accreditation standards of chest pain centres. He introduced to the delegation the latest policy initiatives of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government relating to the establishment of the chest pain centre and cross-boundary medical collaboration.
Professor Lo said, “The HKSAR Government has all along been committed to enhancing public healthcare services, with a view to making optimal use of valuable healthcare resources for providing services that best suit the public. Among these, the Chief Executive put forward in the 2023 Policy Address the initiative to establish Hong Kong’s first chest pain centre in Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) in 2025 in accordance with national accreditation standards. The initiative aims to further streamline the treatment protocols for patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases, thus shortening the treatment duration as much as possible, achieving better treatment results and boosting the survival rate. In addition, the HKSAR Government and the Hospital Authority (HA) are actively taking forward high-quality healthcare talent training and exchange programmes between Hong Kong and the Mainland.
“Under the principle of ‘complementarity and mutual benefits’ and on the premise of benefitting the healthcare development of both the Mainland and Hong Kong, the HKSAR Government will continue to work together with various counterparts on the Mainland in reinforcing collaboration on healthcare service development with a view to levelling up the healthcare quality together.”
The Chairman of the China Chest Pain Centre Accreditation Committee, Professor Huo Yong, also joined the expert delegation. During the delegation’s stay in Hong Kong, they will attend a chest pain centre forum in QMH to share national experiences in implementing standardised treatment protocols for high-risk acute chest pain such as acute myocardial infarction, and the national accreditation standards. They will conduct an inspection and a clinical demonstration in QMH to support the initiative of establishing a chest pain centre in Hong Kong and facilitate academic exchanges and collaboration. Moreover, the delegation will visit Prince of Wales Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital to meet and have exchanges with the clinical healthcare staff.
The Permanent Secretary for Health, Mr Thomas Chan, the Chief Executive of the HA, Dr Tony Ko, and other representatives of the Health Bureau and the HA also attended the meeting today.
A contractor was fined $152,000 at the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts today (January 29) for violation of Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.
The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on April 18, 2021, at a construction site at the Kai Tak area. It was believed that a worker, while conducting scaffolding work at the building under construction, fell from height to the podium. The worker was sent to hospital and passed away on the same day. read more
​The Civil Aid Service (CAS) and the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today (January 29) to underpin a closer collaboration.
Witnessed by the Under Secretary for Security, Mr Michael Cheuk; the Commissioner of the CAS, Mr Lo Yan-lai; the President of EdUHK, Professor John Lee; and the Dean of Students of EdUHK, Dr Sammy Hui, the MOU was signed by the Chief Staff Officer of the CAS, Mr Leung Kwun-hong, and the Vice President (Research and Development) of EdUHK, Professor Chetwyn Chan.
Over the next five years, the CAS and EdUHK will jointly nurture Hong Kong’s young generations by providing multifaceted learning and exchange opportunities. The CAS will hold experiential learning activities for EdUHK students to improve their fitness, discipline, leadership skills, co-operation and teamwork, emergency response capability, resilience, and more. Meanwhile, EdUHK plans to hold academic research seminars on different topics such as education and leadership for CAS members and cadets regularly, as well as promoting national education.
Mr Cheuk said through the collaboration between the CAS and EdUHK, the CAS may provide EdUHK students with extra-curricular activities such as disciplinary and emergency response training to encourage young people to contribute to society and help them become proactive volunteers. EdUHK will organise tailor-made workshops for CAS cadets to pass on national education knowledge through more interesting ways, so as to cultivate a sense of belonging to the country as well as the spirit of loving the country and Hong Kong among young people.
Professor Lee said EdUHK has been putting efforts into whole-person education to promote youth development. He said he believes that the CAS and EdUHK can capitalise on each other’s strengths through the collaboration to nurture young talents who are based in Hong Kong, ready to engage with the country, and equipped with global perspectives.
