     The Government announced today (March 4) that Mr Chris Chong Yan-tung, Deputy Director of Legal Aid, will take up the post of Director of Legal Aid on March 15, 2022, when Mr Thomas Edward Kwong commences his pre-retirement leave.
 
     Commenting on Mr Chong's appointment, the Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Patrick Nip, said, "Mr Chong possesses profound professional knowledge and rich experience in legal aid work, and displays proven leadership and management skills. I am confident that he will lead the Legal Aid Department to continue to deliver quality service to the community."
 
     On the retirement of Mr Kwong, Mr Nip said, "Mr Kwong has served with zeal and commitment in the civil service over the past 34 years. As the Director of Legal Aid, Mr Kwong has led the Legal Aid Department in rising to various challenges and made exemplary contributions in enhancing the quality of legal aid services. I wish him a fulfilling and happy retirement."

Mr Thomas Edward Kwong

     Mr Kwong joined the Government as Legal Aid Counsel in October 1987. He was promoted to Assistant Principal Legal Aid Counsel in October 1997, to Deputy Principal Legal Aid Counsel in December 2005, and to Deputy Director of Legal Aid in May 2008. He has been Director of Legal Aid since September 2013.
 
Mr Chris Chong Yan-tung

     Mr Chong joined the Government as a Legal Aid Counsel in October 1992. He was promoted to Assistant Principal Legal Aid Counsel in June 2006, to Deputy Principal Legal Aid Counsel in June 2011, and has been Deputy Director of Legal Aid since September 2013.
