The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, delivered a speech at the Tokyo Forum for Clean City & Clear Sky today (May 22). His speech, entitled "Compact City‧Sustainable Systems", illustrated the challenges facing Hong Kong in attaining urban liveability and environmental sustainability in a highly compact urban form.

Speaking at the forum, Mr Wong noted that Hong Kong is a compact city and is dedicated to promoting measures which are conducive to high walkability and low carbon transportation, in order for the city to excel in urban liveability and environmental sustainability. The Government has in recent years launched a series of environmental blueprints to further enhance air quality and improve waste management measures. The Government also encouraged members of the public to save energy, utilise renewable energy, conserve biodiversity and tackle climate change.

In the afternoon, Mr Wong met with the State Minister of the Environment of Japan, Mr Tadahiko Ito, to exchange views on various environmental issues including urban sustainable development and measures to tackle climate change. Mr Wong will join a reception to be hosted by the Governor of Tokyo, Ms Yuriko Koike, in the evening.

Mr Wong will continue his visit by joining a discussion session at the Tokyo Forum for Clean City & Clear Sky tomorrow (May 23).
