Commentary
A Government spokesman said that the value of total restaurant receipts turned to a year-on-year increase of 9.9% in the second quarter of 2021, ending the streak of declines in the preceding eight quarters. It was 26.9% higher than the preceding quarter on a seasonally adjusted basis, reflecting that business rebounded along the stable epidemic situation and improved economic conditions. Yet, total restaurant receipts in the second quarter were still visibly lower than the levels before the COVID-19 pandemic in the absence of incoming visitors.
The spokesman further pointed out that if the local epidemic situation remains contained, business of restaurants should continue to improve in the near term alongside the economic recovery. The Consumption Voucher Scheme will also help. Yet, a full recovery of the sector would hinge on the pandemic developments both in Hong Kong and around the world, which have significant bearings on inbound tourism. To play our part, the community needs to work together to keep the epidemic under control and actively participate in the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme.
