Proposed installation of optical fibre submarine cable from Lantau Island to Cheung Chau gazetted

The Government has proposed to allow Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) Limited to install an optical fibre submarine cable of approximately 4.4 kilometres in length and 60 millimetres in diameter from Tai Long Wan of Lantau Island to Pak Tso Wan of Cheung Chau. The extent of the area of foreshore and seabed affected is described in a notice gazetted today (August 5).

The proposed submarine cable will extend fibre-based networks to the target villages on Cheung Chau in order to support the high-speed broadband connection in the region. The proposed works are tentatively scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2022 for completion by the first quarter of 2023.
