Secretary Michael R. Pompeo met today in Washington with Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa. The Secretary thanked the Foreign Minister for Bahrain’s strong partnership with the United States. The Secretary commended the Foreign Minister for Bahrain’s achievements in reducing human trafficking and its upgrade to Tier 1 status in the 2018 Trafficking in Persons Report. The Secretary and the Foreign Minister continued discussions from the September 28 GCC+2 Ministerial on establishing a Middle East Strategic Alliance, anchored by a united GCC, to advance prosperity, security, and stability in the region. The Secretary and the Foreign Minister also discussed U.S.-Bahrain counterterrorism cooperation, countering the Iranian regime’s malign influence in the region, and other bilateral and regional issues.
