A spokesman for the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) said that part of the first floor of Aberdeen Market is undergoing inspection and maintenance works while market services remain normal.

After receiving a report this morning (June 19) on the suspected spalling of material from the ceiling of part of the first-floor staircase area linking to the cockloft of Aberdeen Market, the FEHD immediately cordoned off the area nearby and informed the staff of the Architectural Services Department (ArchSD) for follow-up. No injury or property loss was caused in the incident. Initial investigation by the ArchSD showed that the incident did not involve structural safety problem. Immediate maintenance work was conducted which is expected to be completed within this week. Market services will not be affected during the period of maintenance work. As a precautionary measure, the ArchSD will also inspect ceiling material at other areas of the market within this week to ensure safety.
