November 2021 issue of “Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics” now available
The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (November 15) the November 2021 issue of the "Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics" (HKMDS).
Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains two feature articles entitled "The Mortality Trend in Hong Kong, 1986 to 2020" and "Statistics on Chinese Medicine in Hong Kong, 2020".
"The Mortality Trend in Hong Kong, 1986 to 2020"
Mortality trend is often used as one of the indicators for assessing the state of health of the population. Analysis of age-sex mortality rates and causes of death can also facilitate planning of healthcare services.
In Hong Kong, the age-sex specific mortality rates for both genders and all age groups have been decreasing continuously, reflecting that residents of Hong Kong tend to live longer along with advancement in healthcare services. Yet, because of population ageing, the overall mortality rates and the number of deaths showed an increasing trend.
This feature article gives a brief account of the mortality trend in Hong Kong over the period from 1986 to 2020. It also discusses the leading causes of death, the expectation of life and the seasonality of deaths.

"Statistics on Chinese Medicine in Hong Kong, 2020"
Chinese medicine has a long history in Hong Kong. The Government has been adopting a multi-pronged approach to facilitate the development of the Chinese medicine sector in Hong Kong. The Chinese medicine sector comprises: (a) manufacture of Chinese medicines; (b) distribution of Chinese medicines, including import/export, wholesale and retail trades; and (c) practising Chinese medicine, including Chinese medicine practitioners of general practice, acupuncture and bone-setting.
This feature article discusses the updated situation of some Chinese medicine activities including the manufacture of Chinese medicines and the distribution of Chinese medicines, as well as the external trade of Chinese herbal medicines.
