The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The Legislative Council Subcommittee on Matters Relating to the Development of Smart City visited Fairview Park in Yuen Long today (January 20) to observe the operation of autonomous shuttle light buses to gain insights into the developments in "smart mobility".

Members first received a briefing on the design of autonomous light shuttle buses by representatives of Automotive Platforms and Application Systems R&D Centre (the Centre), which developed the autonomous driving system. The driverless bus is equipped with an artificial intelligence (AI) system, 15 radars and recognition cameras, together with high-definition electronic maps and image processing technology, enabling the AI system to analyze road conditions and achieve precise positioning. Members noted that since August last year, two driverless light buses conducted a seven-month trial run at Fairview Park to carry residents through the 2.5-kilometre circular route in the estate.

Members then took a test ride on the autonomous shuttle light buses to experience first-hand the manual and automatic modes of driving. They also exchanged views with representatives of the Administration and the Centre on ensuring traffic safety and the application of autonomous vehicle technology, etc.

Members who participated in the visit were the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Matters Relating to the Development of Smart City, Ms Elizabeth Quat, Subcommittee members Mr Andrew Lam, Mr Chan Siu-hung and Professor William Wong; as well as non-Subcommittee members Dr Lo Wai-kwok, Mr Luk Chung-hung, Mr Kenneth Lau, Mr Gary Zhang and Mr Edmund Wong.
