The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:
The first District Council Ordinary Election after improving the district governance system concluded yesterday (December 10). Over 1.19 million electors cast their votes in the election. On behalf of all Legislative Council (LegCo) Members, the President of LegCo, Mr Andrew Leung, expressed gratitude to every elector who voted to elect a new term of District Council members for building a better community. The election was conducted in a fair, just and legal manner.
LegCo passed the District Councils (Amendment) Bill 2023 in July and witnessed the election held yesterday in a positive atmosphere, with healthy competition among candidates. These are instrumental in reforming the district governance system.
Mr Leung believes under the principle of patriots administering Hong Kong, the new term of District Council members will spare no effort to serve the people. He also wishes the new District Council members to do their utmost in discharging their duties, and ensure the operation of District Councils returns to the right track. This is in response to public expectations that District Councils fully utilize the advisory role in assisting the governance of the Special Administrative Region Government. LegCo looks forward to joining hands with the new term of District Councils to effectively address livelihood issues and work for the wellbeing of Hong Kong people.
