Hong Kong Police arrest male illegal immigrant and detain speedboat involving in suspected smuggling activities
Hong Kong Police arrested a 46-year-old Mainland man for illegal immigration at the hillside of Nam Chung Tsuen, Tai O last night (October 18). A speedboat involving in suspected smuggling activities was being detained for investigation.
At about 5.45pm yesterday, Police received a report from a passerby that two speedboats were found aground at a rocky beach near Nam Chung, Tai O in Lantau North Division.
Hong Kong Police officers were deployed to the scene for investigation. It was learnt that Zhuhai Municipal Public Security Bureau officers had conducted an anti-smuggling operation in Mainland waters earlier. For the safety of the officers and the vessel, they had accidentally entered Hong Kong waters when pursuing a speedboat suspected to be engaging in smuggling activities. The vessel, with four Zhuhai Municipal Public Security Bureau officers on board, and the suspected smuggling speedboat were subsequently grounded near Nam Chung. A Mainland man on the speedboat then fled away. During the incident, another vessel of Zhuhai Municipal Public Security Bureau had been deployed to scene to rescue the vessel aground.
No one was injured in the incident and the two Zhuhai Municipal Public Security Bureau vessels concerned had returned to the Mainland waters in the same evening.
At around 9.25pm yesterday, Hong Kong Police stopped a 46-year-old Mainland man at the hillside of Nam Chung Tsuen, Tai O. He was arrested for illegal immigration and is being detained for further enquiries. Hong Kong Police will continue to liaise with Zhuhai Municipal Public Security Bureau on the case.
