To promote the "Well-being design" guide, the Housing Bureau (HB) and the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) today (January 6) announced the launch of the "Let’s Go Well-being Chak On" Design Competition, inviting local young designers and students to join and take Chak On Estate, Sham Shui Po, as a spot to build an inclusive well-being public space.

The HB and HA launched the resident-oriented "Well-being design" guide last September and it will serve as a design reference for the construction of new public housing estates and the improvement works of existing estates. The guide consists of eight booklets covering eight well-being concepts, namely "Health & Vitality", "Green Living and Sustainability", "Age-Friendliness", "Intergenerational & Inclusive Living", "Family & Community Connection", "Urban Integration", "Upward Mobility" and "Perception & Image".

A spokesperson said, "Chak On Estate will serve as a pilot project to engage young designers and students, encouraging them to unleash their creativity and explore the possibilities that enhance well-being in public housing environments. The competition will facilitate direct interaction between residents and participants, enabling designers to gain understanding of residents’ views and needs. Through the application of the 'Well-being design' guide, the competition will generate innovative and thoughtful designs for Chak On Estate's public spaces and foster collaboration between residents and young designers. Winning proposals will be considered as the reference for future estate improvement plans."

The four public spaces covered in the Design Competition are: (1) Chak On Plaza – Estate Stage, (2) Communal space – Cultural and Recreational Room, (3) Estate landmark – Sunset Plaza and (4) Intergeneration Fitness Playscape.

The two categories of the Competition are the Students Category and the Emerging Category; full-time students studying design-related disciplines at Hong Kong's tertiary institutions and full-time young designers are welcome to join. There will be one winner, one 1st runner-up and three honourable mentions for each category. Chak On residents will also vote for the Resident Most Beloved Award. Interested parties please register for the competition on or before January 31. The Competition is divided into the first round and the final round; the results are expected to be announced in May to June.
