A Government spokesman announced today (February 19) that the supply of fresh food from the Mainland remained steady yesterday (February 18).
According to the latest information, the throughput volume of vegetables from the Mainland for supply to the local market through the wholesale markets of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and the Vegetable Marketing Organization yesterday (as at midnight) decreased over that of the day before as a result of disinfection work at individual supply points, and stood at about 11 200 piculs (equivalent to about 678 000 kilograms), some 70 per cent of the volume of a normal day. The overall wholesale price remained steady. The supply of chilled poultry and meat imported yesterday remained at around 70 per cent of that of a normal day.
As regards the supply of live pigs, as the Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse (SSSH) has to be thoroughly disinfected yesterday, the slaughtering process has to be temporarily halted. The Tsuen Wan Slaughterhouse has enhanced its slaughtering service in response to the demand of the trade. It is anticipated that the services of SSSH, including pig auction and the subsequent slaughtering process, will resume today (February 19).
The AFCD updates and publishes the fresh food supply information daily. Members of the public may visit the AFCD website for updates on daily supplies and wholesale prices of fresh food (www.afcd.gov.hk/english/agriculture/agr_fresh/agr_fresh.html).
To stabilise the supply of fresh food in Hong Kong, the Mainland authorities concerned and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government are trying out delivering necessities including fresh food, to Hong Kong by water transportation, supplementing that by land transportation.
