FEHD responds to media report

â€‹In response to a media report on the accumulation of miscellaneous articles next to the noise barrier in Tuen Mun, a spokesman for the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) today (January 13) pointed out that the items shown in the report photos are not rubbish but styrofoam which is temporarily stored there waiting to be taken away for recycling purpose.

The operation of markets and shops in Hong Kong will generate a certain amount of cardboards, styrofoam boxes, etc., which will be collected and put together by recycling operators before they are taken away for recycling purpose.

If the items waiting to be recycled are not placed properly, they may cause sanitation, obstruction or other problems. Therefore, the department has reminded nearby recycling practitioners to review their operational mode and avoid piling up recyclable items in public places for long periods which may cause nuisance to others and impact environmental hygiene. The department has been paying attention to the environmental hygiene conditions of relevant locations and has stepped up street cleansing services at those locations.

The FEHD will also discuss with the Environmental Protection Department on how to collaborate in assisting the recycling industry to carry out recycling activities in public places as far as practicable.

The FEHD encourages all sectors to work together to maintain environmental hygiene so that members of the public can enjoy a better living environment.
