â€‹In response to online rumours claiming that the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has installed Internet Protocol (IP) cameras with facial recognition functions or radio-frequency identification (RFID) features to collect personal data, the FEHD today (January 9) clarified that the IP cameras installed by the department do not carry facial recognition functions or RFID features, and that such rumours are unfounded.

A spokesman for the FEHD stressed that the installation of the IP cameras is to monitor illegal refuse blackspots with a view to combating acts of illegal deposits of refuse for the purpose of improving environmental hygiene. All footage will be properly kept. Footage without suspected cases captured will normally be deleted after random checking by the FEHD within approximately one month.
