Correctional officers stop remand person in custody committing self-harm

     Correctional Services officers stopped a female remand person in custody committing self-harm at Lai King Correctional Institution today (October 15).

     At 1.08am today, the 19-year-old person in custody was found cutting her wrist using a sharpened ball pen cap inside a dormitory and hit her head against the gate of the dormitory. The officers immediately stopped the acts. The person in custody was found conscious. After receiving examination and treatment in the institution hospital, she was referred to a public hospital for further treatment. A clinical psychologist of the department will follow up on the case.

     A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent persons in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

     The person in custody was remanded for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug in April 2019.
