Clusters of infectious diseases cases in Hong Kong East Cluster

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Hong Kong East Cluster made the following announcement today (August 6):
 
     Five patients (aged from 50 to 73) of a Psychogeriatric Male Ward of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital presented with upper respiratory tract infection symptoms since August 2. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and their test results were positive for Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The patients are being treated under isolation with stable condition.
 
     In addition, regarding an earlier announcement by Tung Wah Eastern Hospital on a cluster of patients infected with Influenza A in a female geriatric ward, five more patients (aged 67 to 94) in the ward presented with upper respiratory tract symptoms. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and their test results were positive for Influenza A. The patients are being treated under isolation with stable condition.
 
     Admission to the wards concerned in the two hospitals has been suspended. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the wards are under close surveillance.
 
     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
