The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
The spokesperson for TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital (WTSH) made the following announcement today (October 2):
Three male patients (aged 56 to 87) of a rehabilitation and extended care ward in WTSH have been confirmed as the carriers of Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae upon testing since September 25. One patient passed away on the same day due to his critical condition. The two remaining patients are in stable condition; one has been transferred to Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital for isolation treatment and the other was discharged today.
The hospital will continue the contact tracing investigation of close contacts of the patients in accordance with the prevailing guidelines. A series of enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted:
- thorough cleaning and disinfection of the wards concerned;
- enhanced patient and environmental screening procedures; and
- application of stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene of staff and patients.
The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the patients. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
