Cluster of Influenza A cases in Kwai Chung Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesman for Kwai Chung Hospital (KCH) made the following announcement today (September 20):

     Eleven male patients in a ward of the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit and six male patients in a post-admission ward of KCH (aged 19 to 75) have presented with fever or respiratory symptoms since September 15 and September 19 respectively. Appropriate viral tests had been arranged for the patients and their test results were positive for Influenza A. The patients concerned are being treated in isolation and are in stable condition.

     Admission to the wards and visiting arrangements have been suspended. Infection control measures have already been enhanced according to established guidelines. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the conditions of the patients in the wards concerned.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
