CE welcomes Hong Kong, China Delegation returning from Paris 2024 Olympic Games (with photos/video)

     The welcome home reception for the Hong Kong, China Delegation to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, co-organised by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), was held at the Central Government Offices this afternoon (August 21) to congratulate the Delegation to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for their outstanding achievements, and express gratitude to the coaches for their nurturing, as well as the medical teams for their contributions.
          
     The Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, officiated at the reception and presented certificates of commendation to the Hong Kong athletes who participated in the Games. Addressing the reception, Mr Lee said that the Hong Kong athletes showcased their abilities in this year's Paris Olympic Games, and their achievements were most heartening. In addition to winning two gold and two bronze, a total of four medals, in fencing and swimming events, the athletes also advanced to the semi-finals in table tennis, and reached the quarter-finals in badminton and taekwondo. Meanwhile, he praised the Hong Kong athletes for their excellent performance in rowing, judo, gymnastics, sailing, windsurfing, triathlon, athletics and cycling. Some athletes achieved Hong Kong's best ever Olympic results or their personal bests in their respective disciplines, with many of them ranking top among Asian athletes.
        
     Mr Lee said that the HKSAR Government will continue to spare no effort in training local sports talent and to promote the development of sports in Hong Kong, including comprehensive planning, development and optimisation of sports facilities. In this regard, the new building project of the Hong Kong Sports Institute is soon to be available, and the Kai Tak Sports Park is also expected to be commissioned next year. The HKSAR Government is firmly committed to supporting sports events. The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will commence next week, and the 15th National Games (National Games), the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games will be cohosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao next year. As one of the hosts of the National Games, the HKSAR Government is actively working with the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Macao Special Administrative Region Government to host the National Games, the nation's highest-level sports event, successfully.
          
     Also present at the reception were the President of the SF&OC, Mr Timothy Fok; the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Chan Kwok-ki; the Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Cheuk Wing-hing; the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr Kevin Yeung; the Permanent Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ms Vivian Sum; the Honorary Secretary General of the SF&OC, Mr Edgar Yang; the Chef de Mission for the Hong Kong, China Delegation to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Dr Thomas Brian Stevenson; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mr Vincent Liu; and the Commissioner for Sports, Mr Sam Wong.
          
     This morning the HKSAR Government and the SF&OC arranged a bus parade for the Hong Kong athletes. Members of the public welcomed and cheered them on. The athletes later had a sharing session with students on the Olympic experience at Tamar Park. At noon, the Chief Executive hosted a luncheon at Government House to commend the athletes and Delegation members for their outstanding achievements and efforts in the Olympic Games.
      
     The Paris 2024 Olympic Games was held in France between July 26 and August 11 this year. The Hong Kong, China Delegation sent a total of 35 athletes to compete in 13 events, and achieved historic results by winning two gold medals and two bronze medals in fencing and swimming events.
