Jeremy Corbyn speech to RMT conference

Speaking at the RMT union’s AGM in Exeter on Sunday evening,
Jeremy Corbyn MP, Leader of the Labour Party, recommitted Labour to public
ownership of the railways and measures to improve working conditions, services
standards and affordability across rail and shipping sectors.

Jeremy Corbyn said:

“We don’t know when the next election will be.

“But the next Labour government will introduce a Public Ownership
of the Railways Bill to repeal the Tories’ 1993 Railways Act that privatised
our railways.

“We want our railways run in the public interest, with fare rises
capped, service levels improved, and stations and trains safely staffed.

“We also want better integration of all transport and fairer
investment across the UK.”

On shipping he said:

“Today is the official International Day of the Seafarer. Labour
is committed to working with the RMT to end the shameful exploitation and
undercutting in the UK shipping industry.

“We will ensure that the Race Relations Act and minimum wage
legislation will apply to the shipping industry.

“Our commitments on workers’ rights in every sector are clear: we
will repeal the Trade Union Act and introduce new trade union and workers’
rights.”

Instead of preparing for failure the Government should be putting all their efforts into getting a Brexit deal that works for Britain – Starmer

Keir Starmer, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, responding to David Davis’s comments on the Andrew
Marr Show said:

“Labour has been clear that no deal is not a viable option as
it would be catastrophic for British trade, jobs and security. The sooner David
Davis realises this, the better.

“Instead of preparing for failure the Government should be putting all their
efforts into getting a Brexit deal that works for Britain – that means putting
jobs and the economy first and dropping the no deal mantra.”

Chinese vice premier calls for strengthened ethnic solidarity

Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong Sunday called for more efforts to promote solidarity and progress among various ethnic groups in China.

Authorities should greatly improve the education, healthcare and employment for the ethnic minorities and give them equal access to basic public services, Liu said at a conference on ethnic solidarity in Hohhot, capital city of north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

They should promote the communication among and integration of ethnic groups, creating a social environment where ethnic people live, study, work and share joy together, according to Liu.

Local governments should handle ethnic affairs according to law, and safeguard ethnic solidarity and harmony by laws and the Constitution, She said.

During an inspection in the region, Liu also asked ethnic groups to respect and communicate with each other, making joint efforts to safeguard ethnic solidarity and social stability.

The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was founded 70 years ago as China’s first minority autonomous region under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
