The Department of State’s Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance is pleased to announce its recent online posting of WMEAT 2017, the 35th edition of the State Department’s World Military Expenditures and Arms Transfers (WMEAT) publication, covering the years 2005-2015, on the State Department’s website at http://www.state.gov/t/avc/rls/rpt/wmeat/2017/index.htm.

This edition of WMEAT, like previous recent annual editions, presents data in spreadsheet form for ease of reference by researchers.

The Overseas Schools Advisory Council of the Department of State will hold its winter meeting on Thursday, January 18, 2018, at 9:30 a.m. in conference room 1105, in the Harry S Truman Building at 2201 C Street NW, Washington, DC. The meeting will last until approximately 12:00 p.m. and is open to the public with limited seating available. This meeting will discuss the work and the support Overseas Schools Advisory Council provides to American-sponsored overseas schools. Topics will include the World Virtual School and the Child Protection Project. In addition, the Regional Education Officers will present on various activities and initiatives in American-sponsored overseas schools.

Public access to the Department of State is controlled and space is limited. Members of the public who wish to attend the meeting should contact Dr. Thomas Shearer, at (202) 261-8200, by January 11, to make arrangements to attend and, if necessary, request reasonable accommodations. The public may take part in the discussion, time permitting and at the discretion of the chairman. All attendees must use the C Street entrance to the building.

We are following reports of multiple peaceful protests by Iranian citizens in cities across the country. Iran’s leaders have turned a wealthy country with a rich history and culture into an economically depleted rogue state whose chief exports are violence, bloodshed, and chaos. As President Trump has said, the longest-suffering victims of Iran’s leaders are Iran’s own people.

The United States strongly condemns the arrest of peaceful protesters. We urge all nations to publicly support the Iranian people and their demands for basic rights and an end to corruption.

On June 14, 2017, Secretary Tillerson testified to Congress that he supports “those elements inside of Iran that would lead to a peaceful transition of government. Those elements are there, certainly as we know.” The Secretary today repeats his deep support for the Iranian people.

The United States is deeply concerned by recent attempts in the Kosovo Assembly to abrogate the law on the Specialist Chambers, the court established to hear cases of alleged crimes against humanity, war crimes, and other serious crimes committed during the 1998-2000 conflict. We call on political leaders in the Republic of Kosovo to maintain their commitment to the work of the Chambers and to leave the authorities and jurisdiction of the court unchanged.

As Secretary Tillerson said December 21, the pursuit of justice in the Balkans is not over, and we remain committed to supporting justice for the victims. We applaud the moral courage of the Kosovo political leaders who enacted the law and constitutional amendment in 2015 that enabled this court to be established. We strongly urge Kosovo’s current political leaders and Assembly members not to undo that achievement by tampering with the court now or in the future.
