Press Releases: Landmark Development Finance Legislation Improves America’s Competitiveness Overseas

Press Statement

Michael R. Pompeo

Secretary of State

Washington, DC

October 3, 2018

I welcome passage of the Better Utilization of Investments Leading to Development (BUILD) Act of 2018 by Congress with strong bipartisan support today. The BUILD Act implements President Trump’s vision for our development finance institutions. We are enabling them to mobilize private sector investment to accelerate development and move societies forward. The Act provides opportunities for American companies to compete overseas and create jobs here at home, a critical component of the President’s national economic strategy. BUILD strengthens the U.S. government’s development finance capacity, offering a better alternative to state-directed investments and advancing our foreign policy goals.

I look forward to chairing the board of the new U.S. International Development Finance Corporation created by the BUILD Act and to working with allies and partners to advance its goals.

Press Releases: First Annual U.S.-Australia Energy Security Dialogue

Media Note

Office of the Spokesperson

Washington, DC

October 2, 2018

The U.S. Department of State hosted the first annual U.S.-Australia Energy Security Dialogue in Washington, D.C. on October 2, 2018. Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Energy Resources (ENR) Frank R. Fannon and Australia’s Department of Environment and Energy Deputy Secretary Rob Heferen led the discussions. Officials from the U.S. Departments of Energy and Interior participated in the dialogue along with an Australian delegation from the Departments of Environment and Energy; Industry, Innovation, and Science; and Foreign Affairs and Trade; the Australian Trade and Investment Commission; the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, and the Embassy of Australia in Washington, D.C.

The Energy Security Dialogue is an outcome of the February 23, 2018 meeting of President Trump and former Prime Minister Turnbull where the leaders announced the U.S.-Australia Strategic Partnership on Energy in the Indo-Pacific. This partnership aims to promote regional energy infrastructure and cooperation, open and competitive energy markets, and improved rules and standards in the Indo-Pacific. The concept was broadened to include energy security at the 2018 Australia-U.S. Ministerial consultations held in Palo Alto, California in July.

At today’s Dialogue, officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance the existing framework for bilateral cooperation and to strengthen areas of mutual interest in the energy sector, to include promoting regional energy security, encouraging open and competitive markets, facilitating bilateral energy trade and investment, and advancing clean energy technology policies to promote research, development, and deployment of innovative energy technologies. Officials also shared best practice approaches and lessons learned to address shared challenges domestically in energy and resources.

Today’s Energy Security Dialogue builds upon the commitment to foster an Indo-Pacific region where international trade is rooted in market-based principles, private sector-led development, and good economic governance.

Australia will host the next Energy Security Dialogue in 2019.

Press Releases: Germany National Day

Press Statement

Michael R. Pompeo

Secretary of State

Washington, DC

October 2, 2018

On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Germany as you celebrate the Day of German Unity on October 3.

Germany is one of the United States’ closest allies and an indispensable leader in Europe. As we approach the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, we remember the significance of that event not only for German reunification but also for democracy and freedom across the globe. On this day we celebrate the spirit of unity and Germany’s place as a beacon of light for a Europe that is whole, free, and at peace.

German culture and traditions are indelible aspects of the American experience. More than 45 million Americans claim German ancestry. Our shared values, deep people-to-people ties, and common interest in creating a prosperous and secure world underpin the solid foundations of our relationship.

As you gather in Berlin and across Germany on this 28th anniversary of German reunification, I wish you continued prosperity and thank you for your contributions to the unbreakable U.S.-German relationship. We truly are “Wunderbar Together.”
