Over 4 500 quality job vacancies to be offered at Job Fair for Catering, Retail and Hotel Industry & Middle-aged and Elderly Employment

     The Labour Department (LD) will hold a large-scale job fair at MacPherson Stadium in Mong Kok on July 20 and 21 to provide a large number of vacancies from various industries for job seekers.
 
     About 60 organisations will participate in the two-day job fair and offer over 4 500 quality job vacancies, more than 3 000 of which will come from catering, retail and hotel industries. Around 30 organisations will set up booths and conduct recruitment on the spot each day. A wide variety of positions will be offered including engineer, customer services officer, operations host, reservation clerk, assistant concierge, technician trainee (vehicle mechanic/electrician), assistant manager, restaurant supervisor, pastry commis, management information system officer, senior building supervisor and interior designer. Job seekers can visit the LD's Interactive Employment Service website (www.jobs.gov.hk) for more details of the vacancies.
 
     Over 79 per cent of the vacancies offered in the job fair are full-time jobs. Most vacancies offer monthly salaries ranging from $12,000 to $22,000. About 96 per cent of the vacancies require a Secondary Seven education level or below. Around 66 per cent are open to job seekers without relevant work experience.
 
     Job seekers can submit job applications during the event and may be selected for on-the-spot interviews. They can also make enquiries on the employment services provided by the LD at its counter inside the venue.
 
     The job fair will be held from 11am to 5.30pm at 1/F, MacPherson Stadium, 38 Nelson Street, Mong Kok (near Mong Kok MTR Station Exit E2). Admission is free, with final admission time at 5pm each day.




Missing man in Tsuen Wan located

     Police located a man who went missing in Tsuen Wan.

     Mak Kau-fai, aged 73, went missing after he left his residence in Cheung Shan Estate on July 10 afternoon. His family made a report to Police on July 11.

     Police located the man on Shung King Street, Hung Hom in the morning of July 15. He sustained no injuries and no suspicious circumstances were detected.




Red flags hoisted at several beaches

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (July 18) that due to big waves, red flags have been hoisted at Repulse Bay Beach, South Bay Beach, Stanley Main Beach, Shek O Beach and Big Wave Bay Beach in Southern District, Hong Kong Island; Hung Shing Yeh Beach, Cheung Chau Tung Wan Beach, Silver Mine Bay Beach and Pui O Beach; and Silverstrand Beach and Clear Water Bay Second Beach in Sai Kung District. Beachgoers are advised not to swim at these beaches.




RGC announces funding results of Strategic Topics Grant 2023/24

The following is issued on behalf of the University Grants Committee:
 
     The Research Grants Council (RGC) announced today (July 18) that six selected proposals under the Strategic Topics Grant (STG) 2023/24 were awarded a total funding of around $150 million.
 
     The Chairman of the RGC, Professor Wong Yuk-shan, said, "The objective of the STG is to support collaborative and interdisciplinary research at University Grants Committee-funded universities to address Hong Kong's imminent challenges and seize the opportunities offered by the National 14th Five-Year Plan. We are delighted by the overwhelming response from our academia and the total of 29 preliminary proposals received."
 
     Of the 29 preliminary proposals, 13 were shortlisted for submission of full proposals. After a thorough and rigorous assessment process, six of them were selected for funding (see Annex).
 
     Professor Wong added, "I am pleased to see the successful implementation of this new initiative, which was introduced in 2022. The selected proposals cover a wide range of research areas including artificial intelligence in health care, carbon neutrality, integrated circuits, opto-electronics innovation and technology and public health. We look forward to fruitful outcomes of these research projects which, I am confident, will bring about impactful results and benefit Hong Kong."
 
     Professor Wong expressed his gratitude to members and international experts of the assessment committee for their valuable contributions to the assessment process, as well as local researchers for their staunch support to the STG and the work of the RGC.
 
     Details of the awarded projects have been posted on the RGC website (www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/rgc/). A call for proposals for the STG 2024/25 will be issued later this month. 




Lifesaving services suspended at Hap Mun Bay Beach

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (July 18) that as lifeguards are unable to go to Hap Mun Bay Beach in Sai Kung District by ferries due to inclement weather, lifesaving services at the beach has been suspended until further notice. Beachgoers are advised not to swim at the beach.
