     Here is an item of interest to swimmers.

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (August 1) that Mui Wo Swimming Pool in Islands District has been temporarily closed for cleaning and superchlorination following the discovery of a small amount of vomit in the pool.

     It will be reopened at 7.45pm today.

     The department appeals to swimmers to be considerate and to keep the swimming pools clean. They are advised not to swim after a full meal and should use the toilet facilities if necessary before swimming.

     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (August 1) investigating an imported case of severe paediatric enterovirus (EV) infection, and again urged the public and institutions to maintain strict hand, personal and environmental hygiene.

     The case involves a 2-month-old baby girl with good past health, who has presented with fever since July 27. She was admitted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on the following day and is now in a stable condition.

     Her cerebrospinal fluid specimen tested positive for EV upon laboratory testing. The clinical diagnosis was meningitis.

     Initial enquiries revealed that the patient had travelled to Guangdong with her family from July 16 to 27. Her elder sister had fever and oral ulcers since July 25 and had recovered. Other home contacts have remained asymptomatic so far. Investigations are ongoing.

     A spokesman for the CHP said that as EV infection is transmitted by direct contact with nose and throat discharges, the public should be vigilant and observe the following preventive measures:
 

• Wash hands before eating and after going to the toilet and changing diapers;
• Cover the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing;
• Maintain good ventilation; and
• Thoroughly clean toys or appliances which are contaminated by nasal or oral secretions.

     Children suffering from EV infection should stay at home and avoid contact with other children until they have recovered.

     Police today (August 1) launched the Senior Police Call (SPC) Fight Crime Vigour publicity campaign to disseminate fight crime messages to the public.

     In view of the recent crime trends and statistics of traffic accidents, Police deployed two SPC Fight Crime Vigour publicity trucks, with the themes of anti-deception and road safety, to visit 40 locations in the coming 10 days to remind the public to stay vigilant against deception and comply with road traffic regulations.

     During the campaign, SPC members will distribute promotion leaflets at different stops, reminding members of the public, especially senior citizens, to stay calm and call the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre hotline (18222) when they receive suspicious calls or emails, and to follow traffic regulations.

     In addition, thematic computer games and information booths are available on the publicity trucks for visitors to gain a better understanding of the relevant themes.

     First launched in 2015, the SPC Fight Crime Vigour publicity trucks are deployed to promote the messages of anti-crime, anti-deception and road safety to the public, in particular to the elderly community.

     The temporary night heat shelters will resume their functions as either community centres or community halls in the daytime for hire by the local community and cannot continue to be open as heat shelters. People may choose to take refuge from the heat during the daytime in the common areas in any of the 21 designated community centres or community halls. Their opening hours are from 9am to 10pm.      Two men and a woman were charged with contravening the Hotel and Guesthouse Accommodation Ordinance at the Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts today (August 1). One man was sentenced to two months' imprisonment and the other man and the woman were fined $10,000 and $8,000.
      
     The courts heard that in January and February this year, officers of the Office of the Licensing Authority (OLA), the Home Affairs Department, inspected three suspected unlicensed guesthouses on Shanghai Street, Lai Chi Kok Road and Nam Kok Road in Kowloon. During the inspections, the OLA officers posed as lodgers and successfully rented rooms in these guesthouses on a daily basis.
      
     According to the OLA's records, these guesthouses did not possess licences under the Ordinance on the days of inspection. The men and the woman responsible for managing the premises were charged with contravening section 5(1) of the Ordinance.
      
     A department spokesman stressed that operating or managing an unlicensed guesthouse is a criminal offence and will lead to a criminal record. Upon conviction, the offender is liable to a maximum fine of $200,000 and two years' imprisonment.
           
     The spokesman appealed to anyone with information about suspected unlicensed guesthouses to report it to the OLA through the hotline (Tel: 2881 7498), by email (hadlaenq@had.gov.hk), by fax (2504 5805) using the report form downloaded from the OLA website (www.hadla.gov.hk), or through the mobile application "Hong Kong Licensed Hotels and Guesthouses".
