Results of Eastern District Council Kai Hiu Constituency by-election

     The results of the by-election for the Kai Hiu Constituency of the Eastern District Council held yesterday (June 10) are as follows:

     Chik Kit-ling Elaine was declared elected to the Eastern District Council.




Final voter turnout for Eastern District Council by-election (with photos)

     At the close of polling at 10.30pm today (June 10), 4 307 of the 8 728 registered electors of the Kai Hiu Constituency had cast their votes in the Eastern District Council by-election, representing a turnout of 49.35 per cent. (The voter turnout figures are only for temporary reference.)

     The two polling stations at Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong-Chai Wan Centre and Siu Sai Wan Community Hall opened from 7.30am to 10.30pm.

     The dedicated polling station at Chai Wan Police Station also opened from 7.30am to 10.30pm. It was set up for electors in the Kai Hiu Constituency remanded or detained by law enforcement agencies other than the Correctional Services Department (CSD) to cast their ballots.

     Four dedicated polling stations were also set up at penal institutions for electors in the constituency who are imprisoned or remanded in the CSD's custody to cast their votes at their respective penal institutions. For security reasons, the polling hours were from 9am to 4pm.

Pending manslaughter in Sha Tin

     Police are investigating a pending manslaughter case in Sha Tin yesterday (June 9) in which a 76-year-old man died.

     At about 10.45am today (June 10), Police received a report in which a 76-year-old man collapsed after being pushed to the floor in an elderly home in Kwong Sin Street yesterday. Sustaining head injuries, he was rushed to Prince of Wales Hospital and was subsequently certified dead at 6.15pm that day.

     After initial investigation, Police arrested a 74-year-old man for manslaughter. He is being detained for further enquiries.

     Post-mortem examinations will be conducted later to ascertain the cause of death of the deceased.

     Investigation by the District Crime Squad of Sha Tin District is underway.




Correctional officers stop person in custody attacking staff

     Correctional officers of Shek Pik Prison stopped a person in custody attacking an officer this afternoon (June 10).

     At 12.09pm, the 58-year-old male person in custody suddenly turned emotional and attacked a correctional officer with his hand on the way to Dayroom. Officers at the scene immediately stopped him and called for reinforcement. 

     The correctional officer sustained injury to his chest during the incident, whilst the assailant reported headache and waist discomfort. After examination and treatment provided by the medical officer at the institution hospital, both the officer and the assailant were transferred to a public hospital for further treatment.

     The Correctional Services Department has referred the incident to the Police for investigation.

     The assailant was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of shooting at any person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.




HAD opens temporary night heat shelters

     The Home Affairs Department has opened 15 temporary night heat shelters for people in need of the service.
      
     The shelters will be open until 8am tomorrow.
