“Ukulele Ohana Jam” concert to enchant audience with Hawaiian music (with photos)

     Hawaiian ukulele masters Herb Ohta Jr, Taimane and Chris Kamaka will perform together for the first time this July at the “Ukulele Ohana Jam” concert.
 
     Herb Ohta Jr, son of legendary ukulele master “Ohta-san”, is a master of jazz, R&B, Latin and Brazilian music. Taimane and her popular band, well-established Internet favourites with millions of views for their videos, will perform a variety of songs. Chris Kamaka, who hails from a long line of ukulele luthiers, is renowned for his velvety voice and bass playing.
 
     In addition, the concert will showcase Hawaiian hula dancing by Brittany Waihili’ Okalani Atiburcio and Delys Hulali Recca. Audience members may bring along their own ukuleles for a grand finale jam to enjoy the fun of playing this four-stringed instrument.
 
     “Ukulele Ohana Jam” is one of the programmes of the summer festival International Arts Carnival (IAC). Details are as follows:

Outreach Music Interest Courses open for applications

     The Outreach Music Interest Courses organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) are now open for applications. Over 100 courses, ranging from Chinese and Western musical instrument classes to diverse music workshops, offer a wide variety of choices for applicants. The courses will be held from September 2018 to January 2019.
 
     The workshop series includes courses on choral conducting, ocarina, ukulele, classical guitar, keyboard playing, classical vocal singing, Western music theory (Grades 1 and 2), aural training and ensemble training (Chinese traditional music, saxophone, Western strings and Western chamber music) and the newly added instrumental enrichment series (erhu, clarinet and flute). The course fees range from $205 to $970.
 
     The Outreach Music Interest Courses provide basic training on the xiao, liuyeqin, zhong-ruan, pipa, yangqin, zheng, dizi, erhu, clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet, percussion (glockenspiel and practice pad), violin, viola and cello. The course fee is $1,030.
 
     All courses are conducted in small groups in Cantonese and will be held at different venues throughout Hong Kong, namely Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Sha Tin Town Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, Sheung Wan Civic Centre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre, Tai Po Civic Centre, Kwai Tsing Theatre, Yuen Long Theatre, Ko Shan Theatre, Tuen Mun Town Hall, Hong Kong Central Library and the Music Office’s music centres in Wan Chai, Mong Kok, Kwun Tong, Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan.
 
     Online applications are now available at www.lcsd.gov.hk/musicoffice. Course prospectuses and application forms are also available at various performance venues of the LCSD and music centres of the Music Office. The deadline for applications is July 25. Oversubscribed courses will be processed by ballot. For courses not fully taken up after the first round of application, places will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis from August 29.
