Secretary for Justice fosters ties in Washington, DC (with photos)

     The Secretary for Justice, Ms Teresa Cheng, SC, continued her visit to Washington, DC, the United States (US) today (July 13, Eastern Standard Time).
      
     In the morning, she met with the Deputy Secretary of State of the US, Mr John Sullivan, to exchange views on matters of mutual interest.
      
     In the afternoon, Ms Cheng spoke at Georgetown University Law Center on the dynamics of international legal norms. She said that with Asia becoming one of the most important and dynamic regions in international affairs, it has also risen to become an active and influential player in international relations, especially in the fields of international trade and investment and environment protection. She added that international dispute resolution is an area of relevance where Asia can play a role in the development of international law on a global basis.
      
     Ms Cheng also met with the Executive Vice President of the Heritage Foundation, Dr Kim Holmes, and other scholars of the Foundation; as well as the economist in the Development Research Group of the World Bank, Mr Aart Kraay, to brief them on the latest developments in Hong Kong.
      
     In addition, she met with the Senior Vice President for Asia, US Chamber of Commerce, Mr Charles Freeman, to discuss various issues, including opportunities under the Guangzhou-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area development and Hong Kong's efforts in promoting dispute resolution services.
       
     She will continue her visit to Washington, DC, tomorrow (July 14, Eastern Standard Time) by attending the Society of International Economic Law Biennial Conference, at which she will also deliver a keynote speech.
      
     On July 15 (Eastern Standard Time), Ms Cheng will proceed to New York to continue her visit.

Red flag hoisted at Deep Water Bay Beach

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (July 14) that due to big waves, red flag has been hoisted at Deep Water Bay Beach. Beach-goers are advised not to swim at the beach.




Special traffic arrangements for race meeting in Sha Tin tomorrow

     Police advise motorists that special traffic arrangements will be implemented in Sha Tin to facilitate the race meeting tomorrow (July 15).
      
     The arrangements will come into effect two hours before the start of the first race and will last until the crowds have dispersed after the race meeting.
      
     Appropriate traffic signs will be put up and police will be on hand to guide motorists.
      
     The Police also appeal to people going to Sha Tin Racecourse for the race meeting and to Happy Valley Racecourse for cross betting to make maximum use of public transport.
      
     Parking spaces at the two racecourses are available only to holders of appropriate permits issued by Hong Kong Jockey Club and any vehicles illegally parked will be towed away.
