2019 Rural Ordinary Election completed

     The 2019 Rural Ordinary Election (ROE), covering Village Representative (including Indigenous Inhabitant Representative and Resident Representative) (VR) Election and Kaifong Representative (KFR) Election, held over three consecutive Sundays, concluded successfully yesterday (January 20) with an overall turnout of 60.68%.

     Rounding up the VR Election held on January 6 and 13, a total of 771 candidates from 301 villages contested 397 VR seats, including 264 Indigenous Inhabitants Representatives (IIRs) and 133 Resident Representatives (ReRs). The overall turnout rate was 61.57%, of which the respective turnouts for the IIR and the ReR Elections were 60.21% and 63.67%, with 52 611 voters casting their votes.

     For the KFR Election held yesterday, 65 candidates contested 39 Cheung Chau KFR seats. The overall turnout rate was 50.01%, with 3 553 voters casting their votes.

     Prisoners or remanded unconvicted persons, who have registered as electors, can vote at dedicated polling stations. In the three polling days, 36 prisoners or remanded unconvicted persons casted their votes.

     There were 1 540 seats for the 2019 ROE, with 998 candidates returned uncontested and 106 seats left vacant with no nomination. This year, there were a total of 195 476 and 9 542 eligible registered electors in the VR Election and KFR Election respectively.

     The tenure of office for the new term of VRs and KFRs will run from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2023.




EAC Chairman visits polling and counting station of Kaifong Representative Election (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Electoral Affairs Commission:

     The Chairman, Mr Justice Barnabas Fung Wah and member, Mr Arthur Luk, SC, of the Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC) visited the polling and counting station of the 2019 Kaifong Representative Election for the Market Town of Cheung Chau today (January 20) to observe its operation.

     "During the poll which ended at 9.30pm, the EAC member Mr Arthur Luk, SC, and I visited the polling station in Cheung Chau. The EAC is satisfied with the electoral arrangements which were generally in good order," Mr Justice Fung said.

     Polls for the 2019 Rural Ordinary Election were held on three consecutive Sundays from January 6. The Village Representative Elections were completed smoothly over the past two Sundays. In addition, 17 candidates of the Peng Chau Market Town were returned uncontested.

     "Poll was only held for the Cheung Chau Market Town today to return 39 Kaifong Representatives. After the completion of the count tonight, the whole 2019 Rural Ordinary Election will also come to an end. On behalf of the EAC, I express gratitude to all electoral staff, as well as departments involved, for making proper arrangements for the election," he said.

     The EAC will review various arrangements of the election and submit a report to the Chief Executive within three months.

2019 Kaifong Representative Election: Overall turnout rate

     The polling day of 2019 Kaifong Representative Election for Cheung Chau Market Town ended at 9.30pm today (January 20). A total of 65 candidates contested for 39 seats.

     A total of 3 553 out of the 7 104 registered voters cast their votes, representing an overall turnout of 50.01%.
