Launch ceremony for Eye Examination Scheme under Southern District Signature Project Scheme held today (with photo)

A launch ceremony for the Eye Examination Scheme under the Signature Project Scheme (SPS) of Southern District was held at Wah Kwai Community Centre, Wah Kwai Estate, Aberdeen today (May 19).

To enhance district administration, the Government earmarked a provision of $100 million for each District Council to implement one or two large scale SPS projects to address local needs. The Southern District Council (SDC) endorsed two projects, one of which is the Eye Examination Scheme.

The Scheme will provide one-time free ophthalmic examination services to residents of Southern District who are aged 50 or above starting from May 20, to facilitate early identification of optical abnormalities and encourage a habit of receiving regular ophthalmic examinations. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) will act as a partner in implementing the Eye Examination Scheme.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, thanked the SDC, members of the community and HKU for their support for the SPS. He said he hoped that the scheme would enhance residents’ understanding of ophthalmic healthcare and common eye diseases.

Other officiating guests at the ceremony included the Chairman of the SDC, Dr Chu Ching-hong; the Director of Home Affairs, Miss Janice Tse; the District Officer (Southern), Mrs Dorothy Ma; the Associate Dean (Clinical Affairs) of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of HKU, Professor Joseph Lui; and the Clinical Chair Professor of Department of Ophthalmology of HKU, Professor Jimmy Lai.
