Our Tree Planting
Scheme
The world’s woodlands provide a major life support system for the planet, converting
atmospheric carbon dioxide back into oxygen. They are home to plants and animals
that are rare and endangered. Trees and forests provide life-saving medicines and
new drugs to combat disease. Ten percent of the world’s tree species are under
threat of extinction.
Across the globe 15 million hectares of forest are destroyed every year.
The UK needs trees - Since 1930 nearly half of our ancient woodland has been lost.
Native birds, butterflies, insects and plants all depend on our woodland systems
to survive. Trees provide shade, cut down on noise and reduce airborne pollution.
Tree planting schemes are currently in the Scottish Borders and Cumbria.
In addition to the commitment to plant the renewable tree resource,
welters will also stock the burns and becks within the
tree planting scheme areas with Brown trout smolt and parr thus protecting this
most important British indigenous species. |
