The Transport Department (TD) today (January 22) announced the detailed arrangements of allocating traditional vehicle registration marks (TVRMs) upon exhausting the "ZZ" series.

Under the existing TVRM allocation system, except for some series of letter prefixes reserved for specific purposes, the TD assigns to a registered vehicle the letter prefix from "AA" to "ZZ" in ascending alphabetical order, followed by numerals randomly selected and allocated by the computer system. The TD is now allocating TVRMs under the "ZV" series. Based on the current allocation rate, the allocation of the "ZZ" series is expected to begin in February or March 2025.

A spokesman for the TD said that, according to section 8(1) of the Road Traffic (Registration and Licensing of Vehicles) Regulations (Cap. 374E), registered vehicle owners shall display on the vehicle the registration mark assigned to it in accordance with the specified format under the law. The TD will continue to adopt the existing format to allocate TVRMs returned to the TD earlier upon exhausting the "ZZ" series.

Specifically, the TD will reallocate TVRMs returned but not yet reallocated to other vehicles starting from the "WA" series in reverse alphabetical order, i.e. beginning from the "WA" to the "WZ" series accordingly, followed by the "VA" to the "VZ" series and then the "UA" to the "UZ" series, and so on. To date, about three million of such TVRMs are yet to be reallocated. It is projected that they are sufficient to meet the demand for about two decades in the future.

The TD has completed enhancement of the computer system for the above arrangements. Members of the public may call the hotline at 2804 2600 for enquiries.
