The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of influenza A and Covid-19 cases, the spokesperson for TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital gave the following update today (January 15):

     Eight additional male patients from the same ward were infected with the above viruses through medical surveillance. Among them, six patients (aged 42 to 70) were positive for the influenza A virus, one patient (aged 58) was positive for the Covid-19 virus, and one patient (aged 85) was positive for both viruses. The patients concerned are being treated in isolation and are in stable condition. Further to the earlier confirmed influenza A cases, a 60-year-old male patient passed away today due to his own underlying illness.

     A series of enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted in the ward concerned:

  1. Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned;
  2. Enhanced patient and environmental screening procedures; and
  3. Application of stringent droplet and contact precautions, and enhanced hand hygiene of staff and patients.

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the ward concerned. The hospital has reported the case to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
