The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:
The Chief Executive has accepted the recommendation of the Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal to extend the term of office of the Right Honourable the Lord Hoffmann, GBS, as a non-permanent judge from another common law jurisdiction (CLNPJ) of the Court of Final Appeal (CFA) for a period of three years commencing January 12, 2025.
Welcoming the extension of Lord Hoffmann's term as a CLNPJ, Chief Justice Andrew Cheung today (January 10) noted that Lord Hoffmann is the longest serving CLNPJ on the CFA, having held the position since 1998. His continued commitment to the CFA reflects his strong support for the rule of law and judicial independence in Hong Kong.
Chief Justice Cheung reiterated that since the CFA's establishment in 1997, overseas NPJs have made valuable contributions to the work of the Court and the rule of law in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal Ordinance provides for a list of non-permanent Hong Kong judges and a list of judges from other common law jurisdictions. Their term of appointment is three years, which may be extended for one or more additional three-year periods by the Chief Executive, acting on the Chief Justice's recommendation.
