Police arrested a 52-year-old man yesterday (November 28) afternoon in suspected connection with the arson and murder case happened on Prat Avenue, Tsim Sha Tsui on January 25, 1997. The shop involved in the case was extensively damaged and 17 people were killed.
After in-depth investigation, officers of the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau (OCTB) arrested the man for murder in Tin Shui Wai.
The arrested man is being detained for further enquiries.
Active investigations by OCTB is underway.
OCTB took over the investigation in 1997 and successfully arrested multiple suspects in the same year. Four of the arrestees were subsequently charged with murder. Three of them were sentenced to life imprisonment while one was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 11 years' imprisonment by the High Court.
Thorough investigation by OCTB led the identification of three other culprits. The then 33-year-old man, who was one of the three culprits, was eventually apprehended by the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau in Shenzhen in November 2008. He was returned to Police in December of the same year and was later convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court.
