EPD highly concerned about fatal industrial accident off Shek Kwu Chau

     â€‹The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) is highly concerned about an industrial accident off Shek Kwu Chau that occurred today (July 14), which resulted in the death of a worker.

     The 30-year-old deceased man was a worker of a material supplier for a waste-to-energy facility on an artificial island in the waters off Shek Kwu Chau. Around 9.50am today, he was found unconscious after his hand was injured by a machine on a barge off the artificial island. He was later certified dead at the scene.

     The EPD immediately deployed staff to obtain details of the accident. The Director of Environmental Protection, Dr Samuel Chui, was deeply saddened by the incident. The department is contacting the deceased's family through the contractor to extend sympathies and provide them with appropriate assistance. It is noted that the contractor will give an ex-gratia relief payment to the deceased's family.

     The EPD is very concerned about the accident and has requested the contractor to fully co-operate with the Marine Department in its investigation. The EPD has also requested the contractor to submit an incident report for the department's follow-up investigation.

     The EPD has all along put emphasis on the site safety of construction projects, and closely monitoring the work of contractors. In addition to regular daily inspections on the site and occupational safety conditions, the contractor also provides safety training for subcontractors and material suppliers.
