A spokesman for the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) said today (April 6) that the FEHD has been striving to enhance the facilities in public markets and hawker bazaars to maintain environmental hygiene and provide convenience to the public to go there for shopping. The FEHD has examined the operation of Wi-Fi devices in its public markets and hawker bazaars, and continues to encourage tenants and the public to use contactless payments, thereby reducing cash transactions and the risk of virus transmission.

The FEHD attaches importance to the hygiene conditions of public markets and hawker bazaars, while at the same time maintains close liaison with stakeholders and responds to their needs in a timely manner. In view of the epidemic situation, the FEHD has, with the support of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, installed ultraviolet-C sterilisers at escalator handrails at eight FEHD markets including Lockhart Road Market in Wan Chai. The FEHD will install the same equipment gradually at more than 40 other markets with a high patronage rate this year. In addition, the FEHD and the Architectural Services Department also completed a series of improvement works at Tai Wai Market, including installing facilities such as air curtains at the entrances to improve the efficiency of the air conditioning system of the market. Tenant representatives of Tai Wai Market are satisfied with the improved conditions of the air conditioning system over the past two months.

Currently, around 90 per cent of market venues (including wet markets, cooked food centres/markets) and a number of hawker bazaars (including Haiphong Road Temporary Cooked Food Hawker Bazaar, Woosung Street Temporary Cooked Food Hawker Bazaar, Yue Man Hawker Bazaar, Yau Ma Tei Temporary Jade Hawker Bazaar and Hau Tei Square Hawker Bazaar) under the FEHD have had Wi-Fi devices installed. There is no time limit imposed on the use of the Wi-Fi services. Last year, the FEHD had already enhanced wireless network services with the assistance of network service providers at Tai Wai Market and Luen Wo Hui Market and its cooked food centre.

The spokesman said that it is convenient and hygienic to use contactless payments, and members of the public are encouraged to use contactless payments to reduce the risk of virus transmission. The FEHD will continue to monitor Wi-Fi services at its venues to ensure the smooth operation of contactless payments.
