A partial lunar eclipse will occur in Hong Kong during the evening of November 19 (Friday). As the elevation of the moon will be rather low during the eclipse, the event can be best observed at places with an unobstructed view to the east and the northeast. Details of the partial lunar eclipse are as follows:

Date Time Phenomenon Elevation Direction (Azimuth)
November 19
(Friday)
5.39pm Sunset -1 degree West-southwest
(249 degrees)
5.38pm Moonrise -1 degree East-northeast
(69 degrees)
6.47pm Moon leaves umbra 14 degrees East-northeast
(75 degrees)
8.06pm Moon leaves penumbra 31 degrees East
(80 degrees)

A partial lunar eclipse occurs when part of the moon enters the umbra of the Earth. During the coming event, the moon will be below the horizon at the maximum eclipse, and the eclipse observable in Hong Kong will be already in progress upon moonrise. The moon will leave the umbra at 6.47pm and the whole eclipse process will end at 8.06pm.

Members of the public can watch the lunar eclipse event via a webcast to be jointly provided by the Hong Kong Observatory, the Hong Kong Space Museum, the Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre (sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen) and the Po Leung Kuk Ngan Po Ling College on the following webpage: www.hko.gov.hk/en/gts/event/webcast-20211119.
