The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:
The various events participated by Hong Kong athletes in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games have successfully completed. The President of the Legislative Council (LegCo), Mr Andrew Leung, on behalf of all LegCo Members, today (September 5) extended his congratulations to the Hong Kong, China Delegation (the Hong Kong team) for the remarkable achievements of claiming two silver and three bronze medals.
The Hong Kong team has 23 athletes, competing in eight sports in this year's Paralympic Games. Half of the athletes were debutants. Mr Leung said, "Like many Hong Kong people, I watched the splendid performances of the Hong Kong team live on television and cheered for them. The athletes played with full strength throughout the Paralympics. The sweat, tenacity and courage demonstrated by them were heartening. The training and support teams who made relentless efforts, as well as the families and volunteers who have been fully supportive to the athletes, also deserve great credit. I would like to pay my respects to them all."
Mr Leung said, "Many international competitions were cancelled due to the epidemic which had interrupted the training of the athletes. This did not undermine their determination to excel. On the contrary, they performed magnificently in the Paralympics which is even more commendable."
Mr Leung continued, "Every athlete participating in the Paralympics is a life fighter. They made the impossible possible and broke through limitations with perseverance and strenuous efforts. They are our heroes no matter they win any medal or not."
Mr Leung hopes that the remarkable achievements of the Hong Kong team in this year's Paralympics can inspire the people with disabilities to actively participate in sports and chase for their dreams. LegCo would continue to work with the Government and various sectors in society to promote the development of Paralympic sports and the support for Paralympic athletes of Hong Kong. Mr Leung also appeals to the public to join hands in building a caring and inclusive society.
